Years of Survivorship: 3
At age 50, I was diagnosed with colon cancer following my very first colonoscopy. I had no symptoms that anything was wrong, so I was shocked to get the news. Fortunately, my cancer was caught in the early stages and I underwent colon resection surgery. During my recovery, I felt truly blessed to have my faith in God and the love and support of my husband, children, family, friends, co-workers and neighbors. Cancer has taught me to slow down and appreciate each day as a precious gift from God. We are not promised tomorrow, so live life today and don’t put things off. I urge everyone to get health screenings as recommended by your physician, especially if you have a history of cancer in your family. Early detection can save your life – it saved mine!
For more than a 100 years, The American Cancer Society has been leading the fight to end cancer. With your support, we have helped usher in an era where more people survive cancer than ever before. By translating our research findings into action, we've seen a 20% decline in US cancer death rates since the early 1990s.
